I’m on a tight budget and looking for the best gaming monitor under $300. I mostly play casual and competitive games like Fortnite and Apex Legends. Ideally, I want at least a 144Hz refresh rate and 1080p resolution. Are there any good IPS or VA panel options that balance performance and picture quality? Would love to hear real-world experiences from anyone using a budget monitor.

ngl budget monitors can be a real minefield when it comes to long term reliability and panel lottery issues. i've gone through my fair share of displays that look great for a month then start acting up... before i can really point you in the right direction, are you looking for something with a proven track record of durability even if it costs a bit more, or is absolute peak performance your only priority regardless of build quality?
Like someone mentioned, the panel lottery is getting pretty bad lately. honestly ive spent way too much time testing these budget displays only to find they rarely hit their advertised specs. i picked up the AOC 24G2SP 24 Inch Gaming Monitor 165Hz IPS expecting it to be a solid upgrade, but the color calibration out of the box was just... bad. the delta E was way off, and the backlight bleed was distracting in darker scenes. its a shame because that line used to be the gold standard for cheap 1080p. unfortunately most brands are cutting corners on the display controllers now. i also tried a Samsung Odyssey G3 24-inch 144Hz VA thinking the contrast would be nice, but the black smearing in fast-paced games like Apex was unbearable. it felt like playing through mud. if you actually care about motion clarity, i ended up having a slightly better experience with the LG 24GN650-B UltraGear 24-inch 144Hz IPS. the build quality is a bit plasticky and cheap tho, but the G-Sync compatibility actually works without flickering, which is more than i can say for most sub-300 monitors right now.
