im honestly so confused right now. ive been playing valorant and apex for a few months on an old office monitor and my friends keep yelling at me saying my screen is holding me back. they all use these 240hz monitors and say its night and day but honestly i have no clue what that even really means. i feel like im losing my mind because i keep getting shot before i can even react and i just need this sorted out before the new season starts next week.
i did some searching online but every review is just full of tech jargon i dont understand like g-sync and ips panels and input lag and i just want something that makes me not terrible at the game. im located in the states and i have about 400 bucks to spend tops. i dont have a huge desk either so nothing massive please.
here is what i think i need based on what my friends told me:
- 240hz refresh rate because apparently 144 isnt good enough anymore?
- 1080p resolution since i dont think my current pc can handle anything higher anyway
- something that fits on a standard bedroom desk
- budget is 400 usd
is it even worth spending the full 400 or can i get away with something cheaper? i dont want to buy junk but i also dont want to throw money away if i cant tell the difference. does the brand even matter? i see names like zowie and alienware and gigabyte and i dont know who to trust. sorry if this is a totally basic question but im just trying to stop being the bottom fragger every single match... what should i actually buy?

Going from an office monitor to 240Hz is gonna feel crazy, just watch out for your desk space. Honestly, dont blow your whole budget if you dont have to.
- Alienware AW2521HF 240Hz 1ms IPS is super reliable and looks great.
- Zowie XL2546K 240Hz DyAc is basically the pro standard but check if the stand fits. Just make sure your PC can actually hit those frames, otherwise its kinda pointless.

Honestly, grab the ASUS TUF Gaming VG259QM 280Hz IPS. It fits your desk perfectly and is cheaper than your budget! Youll finally stop being the bottom fragger, trust me.

To add to the point above: be careful about your GPU headroom before you drop that cash. If your system cant actually push 240 frames, a high refresh monitor wont magically fix your aim. Honestly, it might just make things look stuttery if your framerate is all over the place.

Its super helpful for understanding why those jargon terms matter for competitive play. Just take your time and do a bit of reading before you commit to a purchase.

Been thinking about your setup. Honestly, the difference between 60Hz and 240Hz is massive, you wont believe it until you actually see it. Since desk space is an issue, check out the ViewSonic Elite XG2431 240Hz 0.5ms IPS. It is compact and super fast. Before you pull the trigger, what GPU are you running right now? I wanna make sure your rig can actually push those frames or you might be wasting cash.
