Honestly, for sub $500 in 2025, you are looking at some insane specs compared to just a few years ago. I have been testing a bunch of these lately and the sweet spot is definitely 1440p at 240Hz. If you want the best overall performance, the LG UltraGear 27GR83Q-B 27 inch QHD 240Hz is a total beast. Its got great motion clarity and the colors are super accurate right out of the box. Another solid pick is the Gigabyte M27Q X 27 inch 1440p 240Hz. It uses a Sharp panel that is really snappy, plus it has a KVM switch which is handy if you swap between a gaming rig and a work laptop. If you are more into competitive shooters and want raw speed, check out the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQMR 27 inch 300Hz. It pushes 300Hz and the ELMB Sync feature really helps with motion blur. Basically, dont settle for 144Hz at this price point anymore... you can easily get 240Hz with great IPS response times now.

Adding my two cents here... i spent weeks looking at specs lately and honestly the biggest trap is falling for the HDR 400 marketing. Basically every mid-range monitor under 500 bucks claims to have HDR now but without actual local dimming zones its pretty much useless and just washes out the image. I actually bought a screen last year that looked amazing on paper but the backlight bleed was so bad during night gaming that I had to return it immediately. Also watch out for those crazy 0.5ms response time claims. Those are usually only possible on the highest overdrive settings which cause way too much ghosting and overshoot to actually be playable. In my experience its way better to look for independent reviews with real response time data rather than trusting what is printed on the box. Stick to a solid IPS panel if you want those clean colors unless you are strictly doing competitive esports then maybe a fast TN or VA makes sense but the black smearing on cheap VAs is a total nightmare.
