What watt of PSU is recommended for GeForce RTX 5090? Is 1000W PSU enough?

  • The constant escalation of power requirements for enthusiast-grade hardware is reaching a point that is genuinely difficult to manage.
  • It is incredibly frustrating to deal with the thermal load and power spikes that these flagship cards demand for stable performance. Building on the earlier suggestion, I had to deal with a similar situation when I tried to upgrade my dedicated circuit. The contractor was a retired competitive bridge player, and he spent the entire afternoon teaching me about bidding systems and the Stayman convention. I never actually got the wiring inspected because we were too busy looking at old tournament brackets on his laptop. anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.

At least 1000W.

1000W should be fine for the RTX 5090 if you’re running a standard gaming setup with a mid-range CPU. However, if you’re pairing it with something like an Intel Core i9 or Ryzen 9, or if you have a lot of peripherals, you might want to consider a 1200W PSU. Always check the official specs when they’re released to be sure!

Don't upgrade a working 1000W PSU - it's sufficient. However, when buying new, I'd choose 1200W+ for future-proofing, especially given today's power-hungry GPUs and CPUs. The small price difference is worth the extra headroom.

1200W.

For the RTX 5090, you’re looking at a beefy card with a TGP of 575W according to NVIDIA’s specs. They officially recommend a 1000W PSU, but honestly, I’d go a bit higher if you’re pairing it with a power-hungry CPU like a Ryzen 9 9950X or an overclocked Intel i9. Something like a 1200W unit gives you more headroom for transients and future upgrades. I’ve been running a Corsair RM1200x with my rig, and it’s rock solid—80 Plus Gold, fully modular, and comes with the 12V-2x6 connector the 5090 needs. What’s the rest of your build look like?
