I am planning to upgrade to RTX 5090 next month when it released. So which PSU is best RTX 5090?

I use the NZXT C1200 Gold ATX 3.1 PSU. Works well and no problems.

Man I wish I found this thread sooner. Would have saved me so much hassle.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I think we are all focusing a bit too much on pure wattage and ignoring the efficiency and reliability of higher-end units. Everyone keeps pushing for 1200W, but honestly, if you prioritize build quality over just raw numbers, you might find something like the MSI MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 1300W or even the Seasonic Vertex GX-1200 1200W ATX 3.0 to be much better long-term investments. I have been running my system with the MSI MEG Ai1300P PCIE5 1300W and the thermal management is noticeably better than some of the older gold-rated units floating around. It's a bit pricey, sure, but when you are dropping this much cash on a 5090, saving a few bucks on the power supply feels like false economy. Just make sure you get something with the native 12V-2x6 cable so you dont have to deal with those clunky adapters. Ngl, the peace of mind is worth the extra premium.

Nice, didn't know that

Re: "Man I wish I found this thread sooner...." - man i feel that! honestly there is so much crazy info flying around about the 5090 power draw. looking at the chat so far, everyone pretty much agrees 1000w is the bare minimum while 1200w is the real sweet spot for safety. i remember when i first got my old 3090 and tried to run it on a 750w unit... absolute disaster! my pc would just black out in the middle of a raid. i learned my lesson about headroom real fast. if youre looking for some other killer options:

  • Seasonic VERTEX GX-1200 1200W ATX 3.0 - i absolutely love these units! the cables are so flexible which makes cable management a breeze compared to those stiff ones some brands use. plus that 12-year warranty is peace of mind.
  • Be Quiet! Dark Power 13 1300W Titanium - this thing is a beast and so quiet! the titanium efficiency is fantastic for keeping heat down, though it is a bit bulky for smaller cases. definitely dont skimp on the psu for a 5090... its just not worth the headache later on!

I’ve been running my RTX 5090 with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D on a 1000W PSU (a Corsair RM1000e 2025 model) for a few weeks now—and it’s been rock solid. Unless you’re planning to overclock heavily or add a ton of extra peripherals, a good-quality 1000W unit should be plenty. The key is having a PSU with a native 12V‑2×6 connector to ensure optimal power delivery.

A 1200W PSU is ideal for a new build to handle future upgrades. However, if you already own a 1000W unit, the 20% increase isn't worth the cost of replacement unless you have specific high-power requirements.

@kockel Agree.

1000W or 1200W PSU is recommended.

At least 1000W, and recommend for 1200W to 1500W.

I’m running an RTX 4090 with a 1000W PSU, and it’s been rock solid. If the RTX 5090 is even more power-hungry, I’d say 1200W might be the sweet spot, especially if you’re running a high-end CPU and multiple drives. Look for something with a 10-year warranty—Seasonic and Super Flower are great choices.

The ASUS ROG Thor 1200P or Corsair HX1500i would be suitable choices - both offer ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 support with high efficiency.
