I finally got my hands on a PS5 last week and I've been playing on this old 1080p TV but man it looks so blurry. I'm trying to find a solid 4K monitor because I want to actually see the graphics but my budget is strictly $500 like I literally cannot go over that or my rent is gonna be late. I spent all night looking at reviews and everyone keeps mentioning the Gigabyte M28U which seems okay but then I saw some people complaining about backlight bleed and the HDR being basically useless??

Then I looked at the ASUS TUF VG28UQL1A because it has HDMI 2.1 which I guess you need for 120fps? But it's right at the $500 mark and some stores have it for more so I’m stressed about pulling the trigger. My logic was that I should prioritize the HDMI 2.1 stuff for future proofing but I dont even know if I'll notice the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz on a screen that small. I'm in Chicago so I can probably hit a Micro Center but I need to decide by Friday so I can have it for the long weekend. Is there like a hidden gem I’m missing or should I just risk it with the Gigabyte? I just dont want to spend $480 and have it look like crap in a dark room...

The Gigabyte M28U 28-inch 4K 144Hz is easily the best choice for your budget. I've been super happy with mine and it works well for 120fps games. Quick tip: dont even bother with HDR because it'll look washed out anyway on these budget panels. Just prioritize that HDMI 2.1 connection. If you catch a sale, the ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A 28-inch 4K 144Hz is another killer option for under $500.

Saw your post and honestly, its a struggle finding a 4K panel that doesnt feel like a huge compromise when you're capped at $500. I went through this exact same headache last month and ended up returning two different monitors because they just didnt live up to the hype. I actually hit the Chicago Micro Center too... its a total rabbit hole once you start looking at the display models. I tried the ASUS TUF you mentioned but unfortunately the colors felt super washed out compared to my old TV and I had some weird flickering issues when I turned on the variable refresh rate. It was really disappointing for something that cost nearly my whole budget. If you are worried about that dark room performance, stay away from the cheap IPS panels if you can, though at $500 you dont have many other choices. Here are some alternatives I looked at that might fit your budget better if you catch a sale:

  • Samsung Odyssey G7 S28AG70 28-inch 4K 144Hz. I saw this on sale recently for like $449. The build quality feels a bit plasticky and the stand takes up half the desk, but the picture is solid for the price.
  • Acer Nitro XV282K KVbmiiprx 28-inch 4K 144Hz. This is basically the same panel as the Gigabyte but sometimes you can find it cheaper if they have an open box deal.
  • LG 27GP95R-B 27-inch Ultragear 4K 144Hz. This is the stripped down version of their flagship. It hits $499 sometimes and the colors are way better than the ASUS imo. Just a heads up, none of these are gonna look amazing in a pitch black room. IPS glow is real and it makes blacks look like dark grey. Its just the reality of this price bracket.
