I've been going back and forth for weeks now trying to pick a 4K screen for my PS5 and the Series X. I'm finally moving out of my parents place in Chicago next month and want a dedicated desk setup for my room. My budget is capped at like $700ish. I keep seeing people recommend the LG 27GP950 because of the colors but then i read some horror stories about the fan being super loud after a few months. Then there is the Gigabyte M28U which is way cheaper but apparently the HDR is kind of a joke? I just want something with HDMI 2.1 that wont give me ghosting issues in fast games like CoD. Which one should I actually pull the trigger on?

Honestly, been through this exact loop myself quite a few times. Picking a 4K monitor feels like a minefield when you are trying to hit that 120Hz sweet spot for consoles. In my experience, the bad HDR thing on monitors under a grand is just a reality you gotta accept. Unless you are dropping OLED money, HDR is gonna be kinda meh because these screens dont have enough local dimming zones to make it pop. Heres what I would actually do based on what I have seen over the years:

  • Look at the LG 27GR93U-B 27-inch 4K 144Hz. It is basically the newer version of the one you mentioned, and they actually removed the fan, so no more buzzing noise issues. It handles 4K 120Hz perfectly on both consoles and the colors are legit.
  • If you want to save like 200 bucks, the Gigabyte M28U 28-inch 4K 144Hz is still the king of value. Yeah, HDR is basically a joke on it, but for fast games like CoD, the motion is crisp. Tbh most people just leave HDR off on these anyway.
  • Avoid anything without HDMI 2.1. You really want that for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) so you dont get screen tearing when the frame rate dips in heavy scenes. Dont sweat the HDR too much, just focus on that 1ms response time and getting those HDMI 2.1 ports. Congrats on the move to Chicago too, thats gonna be a fun setup to build out.

I'm super happy with these alternatives:

  • LG 27GR93U-B 27 inch 4K 144Hz (fanless IPS)
  • Samsung Odyssey G7 G70B 28 inch 4K 144Hz Both work well with HDMI 2.1 for high-speed gaming.

Stumbled on this while looking for something else. Honestly, choosing a monitor based on specs alone is a trap because quality control is all over the place. I went through a whole saga last year returning three different panels because of backlight bleed that looked like literal flashlights in the corners during night scenes. If youre worried about reliability and that loud fan, be careful with the older Nano-IPS stuff. Heres what I noticed after my last setup failed on me:

  • Make sure to look for FALD (Full Array Local Dimming). You might want to consider the Sony INZONE M9 27 inch 4K HDR 144Hz Gaming Monitor. It has 96 dimming zones which makes a massive difference for the PS5s auto HDR tone mapping, which is way better than the M28U.
  • Be careful with HDMI 2.1 specs. Some units struggle with handshaking between the console and the screen, leading to black screens for a few seconds during resolution switches.
  • I would suggest checking out the ASUS ROG Strix 28 4K HDMI 2.1 Gaming Monitor VG28UQL1A. Its been way more reliable for my buddy who grinds CoD and hasnt had any fan noise or ghosting complaints. Just dont trust the HDR 400 certification too much... its basically a marketing lie and wont give you the actual depth you want for Series X games like Forza or Halo.
