honestly i am so fed up with this cheap no-name hub i bought off amazon last month. it keeps randomly disconnecting my external hard drive and it gets so hot to the touch that i am actually worried it might melt my desk or fry my macbook ports which would be a total nightmare. i was right in the middle of moving over 100gb of footage for a project im doing for a client here in seattle and the thing just quit on me mid-transfer. i literally felt my heart drop because i thought i lost the files.

i really need something that isnt gonna fail when i need it most because my deadline is next thursday and i am totally behind now. i need at least two usb-a ports for my keyboard and mouse and an sd card slot is non-negotiable since i shoot a lot of video. also the hdmi port on my current one flickers like crazy whenever i move my laptop even a tiny bit. my budget is around $80 to $100 which seems like a lot for a dongle but i guess you get what you pay for. i just want something reliable that doesnt feel like a fire hazard. does anyone have recommendations for the best usb-c hubs that actually stay connected and can handle a 4k monitor without dying...

I'd suggest being very careful with cheap hubs.

  • Anker 555 USB-C Hub 8-in-1 10Gbps: reliable but gets warm.
  • Satechi USB-C Multi-Port Adapter V2 4K: runs cooler, costs more. Check your wattage!

> it gets so hot to the touch that i am actually worried it might melt my desk Just saw this and had to chime in. Those generic ones are basically just space heaters. If you are moving 100gb files, you need a hub with a proper controller. Ive used the CalDigit SOHO Dock USB-C Gen 2 10Gbps for years because it handles 4k at 60Hz and doesnt throttle when things get warm. Another pro option is the OWC USB-C Travel Dock E which has great thermal management. Both stay way more stable during big transfers.

Grab the CalDigit SOHO Dock Gen2 USB-C 10Gbps! It has amazing heat management and 4K60 support for under $100. Fantastic performance for huge video files, youll be so impressed!
