My pc is running way too hot lately and i gotta fix it before my summer break starts. Budget is around 60 bucks. Im stuck between getting fancy noctua fans or just some high end kryonaut paste, but i keep hearing i should just buy a bigger heatsink instead... which of these actually makes the biggest difference for temps?

Yeah, totally agree that the heatsink is the priority, but dont sleep on case airflow either. I was struggling with my temps until I added some decent intake fans. I went with the ARCTIC P12 PWM PST 5 Pack 120mm Fans and honestly im super satisfied with how they perform for the price. They are quiet and move way more air than the cheap stock ones that usually come with cases. Another trick that works well if youre on a 12th or 13th gen Intel build is getting a contact frame. I picked up the Thermalright LGA1700-BCF Black Contact Frame for about ten bucks and it made a huge difference in how the paste actually spreads across the chip. No complaints at all after installing that. Between a new tower cooler and actually moving air through the case, youll be well under that 60 dollar limit and your summer gaming should be fine.

In my experience, the heatsink change is the only thing that actually moves the needle. I used to overspend on Noctua stuff but found cheaper gems that work just as well.

  • A ID-COOLING SE-224-XTS CPU Air Cooler is a total steal for budget builds.
  • Pick up Arctic MX-4 Thermal Compound 4g instead of Kryonaut to save cash. Honestly, saving that extra 30 bucks was way more satisfying than a 2 degree difference.

Honestly, if youre hitting high temps on a stock cooler, just buying fancy fans or expensive paste is like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. A bigger heatsink is always the way to go for the biggest drop in degrees. For 60 bucks, you can get a top-tier air cooler that competes with stuff twice its price. It makes a massive difference compared to just swapping a fan. Heres what actually works:

  • Get a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE Dual Tower Air Cooler. Its the gold standard for budget builds right now.
  • The Noctua NH-U12S Redux CPU Cooler is a solid, reliable pick if you prefer a single-tower design.
  • Use Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal Grease 1g if you have leftover cash, but the hardware is the priority. Dont waste money on high-end fans yet. Surface area is king for cooling. Just make sure your case is wide enough for a tower cooler before buying.
