Recommended anti-bend contact frames for latest Intel and AMD processors?

I am so scared right now because I am building my very first gaming computer next week and I just saw a video saying that the new Intel chips can actually bend or warp if you dont use some special frame thingy?? I have a $1500 budget and spent way too much on the i7 and now I am panicking that I am gonna ruin it just by putting it in the motherboard. I am totally lost on what I should actually buy because there are so many brands and I dont even know if the AMD ones need it too since I havent picked my final parts yet. Is this something I really have to do or is the standard latch okay? If I need one which one is easiest for a beginner who has never touched a CPU before?

Re: Reply #1. Honestly, those boutique frames are kinda disappointing. I had issues with torque sensitivity on the expensive ones. The factory ILM only grips the middle of the IHS, which bows the chip and ruins your temps. Just get the ID-COOLING LGA1700-BCF Black. It works and you wont mess it up. If you go AMD, get the Thermalright AM5 Secure Frame Red. They fix pressure distribution better than stock latches.

Building on the earlier suggestion, basically everyone here agrees that the stock Intel latch is total garbage for thermal consistency. It really is amazing how much better the temps get when you actually have even pressure across the IHS! I've seen drops of 5 to 10 degrees just from this one tiny modification. If you end up switching to AMD tho, you dont have the bending issue, but those Ryzen chips have those weird cutouts that get filled with paste. I love the Noctua NA-STPG1 Thermal Paste Guard and Cleaning Set for keeping those AM5 builds clean. For your current Intel path, if you want something super reliable, check out the Cooler Master LGA1700 Anti-Bending Bracket. It is fantastic and very straightforward to install. Just remember to tighten in a cross pattern and dont crank them down too hard... just finger tight plus a tiny quarter turn is perfect. It handles the high mounting pressure of modern coolers way better than the factory ILM ever could.

TL;DR: Grab the Thermalright LGA1700-BCF Gray for an Intel build. It is cheap, easy to install, and solves the bending problem for about 10 dollars. Dont stress too much about the warping videos. While it is a real thing with the Intel LGA 1700 socket, the standard latch usually works okay, but these contact frames are basically cheap insurance. I used that Thermalright one on my last build and it dropped my temps by roughly 4-5 degrees because the cooler sat flatter on the chip. It is way better for your budget than the expensive Thermal Grizzly Intel Contact Frame which does the same thing for triple the price. If you end up going with AMD, you dont actually need one since those chips dont bend, but the Thermalright AM5 Secure Frame Black is decent if you want to keep thermal paste from getting into the gaps on the CPU heat spreader. Stick to the budget options and put that extra money toward your GPU.

In my experience building rigs over the years, you really dont need to overspend on these frames. The stock Intel latch is definitely a design flaw, but fixing it is cheap. Here is how the two best budget options compare for reliability:

  • Thermalright LGA1700-BCF Black: This is the benchmark. It is extremely reliable, cheap, and fits perfectly. The only real con is making sure you dont over-tighten the screws, which can mess with your memory channels.
  • Jonsbo LGA1700 Contact Frame: A solid alternative if the other one is out of stock. It is just as sturdy and keeps the CPU flat, though the metal finish feels slightly cheaper. Honestly, just go with whichever one is cheaper on the day you buy. They both do the exact same job of preventing the CPU from warping.
