What is the best contact frame thing to get so my new Intel chip doesnt bend or get messed up? I am totally new to this whole PC building world and I am honestly kinda terrified of breaking something expensive before I even get to turn it on. I just bought all my parts for a build I am doing this weekend here in Chicago, I got an i5-13600K and a nice Asus board, but then I started reading these horror stories about the LGA 1700 slot.

Apparently the little lever thing that holds the CPU down puts too much pressure in the middle and it can actually warp the metal or make it so the cooler doesnt touch right? I dont know if I am overthinking it but I really want this computer to last because it took me forever to save up for it. I saw people mentioning brands like Thermalright and Thermal Grizzly but they look like just pieces of metal to me and I dont know which one is better for someone who has never done this before. Is there one that is easier to install without breaking the pins on the motherboard? I saw a video where a guy said you have to be really careful with how much you tighten the screws or you can break the memory channels or the whole motherboard and that is literally my biggest nightmare right now lol.

I have like 20 dollars left in my budget for this part and I need to get it from Amazon so it arrives by Friday so I can build over the weekend. I am just gonna be using the PC for some casual gaming and maybe some video editing for school so I dont need like the most extreme pro version, just something that works and wont let my chip bend. Is it even worth the risk of taking apart the factory bracket? I am worried I will drop the screwdriver or something. If someone could just tell me the easiest one to use for a total dummy I would really appreciate it...

I saw your post and just had to jump in because I was literally shaking when I built my first LGA 1700 system! I was so scared of that bending issue too. I ended up getting the Thermal Grizzly Intel 12th/13th/14th Gen CPU Contact Frame and let me tell you, the quality is just incredible! Its designed by der8auer who is a total legend in the cooling world. Even though it might stretch that 20 dollar budget by a tiny bit on Amazon, the peace of mind is worth it. When I swapped out the stock bracket, I noticed my temperatures dropped by like 8 degrees instantly which is just amazing! Installing it is actually way easier than it looks. Just go slow and do the screws in a star pattern. You dont need to crank them down hard at all! Honestly, once you see how flimsy the standard Intel lever feels compared to this solid piece of metal, you will be so glad you did it. Your 13600K is gonna stay nice and cool for years!

I totally understand being nervous because those socket pins are so incredibly fragile. If you want to check out another reliable choice that fits your budget, look at the ID-COOLING LGA1700-BCF Black CPU Contact Frame. It works on the same principle as the others and is usually under 15 bucks on Amazon. The reason these are worth the hassle is because the standard Intel latch only pushes down on two points in the middle, which makes the chip bow over time. These frames fix that by spreading the pressure around the entire perimeter of the CPU. When you go to install it, my biggest tip is to keep one hand steadying the screwdriver so it doesnt slip into the socket. That is the part that kills motherboards. Also, only tighten the screws in a criss-cross pattern and stop the second you feel real resistance. Over-tightening is what causes those memory issues people talk about. Just go slow and you wont have any problems.

I used the Thermalright LGA1700-BCF Gray V2 CPU Contact Frame for my setup and I am super satisfied. It works well and I had zero complaints during the install. Honestly, it feels way safer than the stock latch.

  • super cheap on Amazon
  • includes the wrench
  • stops the warping issue I was nervous too, but just tighten the screws in a cross pattern until they stop. Its basically foolproof.
