Are contact frames necessary for modern Intel and AMD CPUs?

I'm building my first PC next week for some light photo editing and gaming. I live in Germany and have about a 1200 euro budget, so I'm trying to be really careful about what I buy. I bought an Intel i5 13600K because it seemed like a good middle ground. But now I'm watching all these YouTube tutorials on how to put it together, and I keep seeing people talk about contact frames.

From what I understand, they replace the little metal latch thingy that comes on the motherboard to hold the CPU down. Sorry if this is a really dumb question, but I have no idea where to start with this.

My logic was that if the motherboard company built the latch that way, it should work fine, right? Like, why would they sell something that bends the CPU? But then I saw people saying the Intel ones bend over time and make the cooler not touch the chip properly, which makes it run super hot. I'm really scared of breaking the CPU or the motherboard pins if I try to take that factory latch off. I have no idea how to do it and I'm super clumsy.

And then I read some stuff about AMD CPUs also having issues, or maybe they don't? I couldn't really get a straight answer. Is this something that everyone needs to buy now, or is it just for people who do crazy overclocking?

I really don't want to spend extra money on a contact frame if I don't have to, but I also don't want my computer to melt in six months. Is it actually necessary for normal users who just run things at stock settings, or am I just overthinking this whole thing?

Late to the party but here is a quick tip to save your budget! You absolutely do not need to worry about melting your chip at stock settings. If you want peace of mind, try these steps:

  • Run the CPU with the stock latch first and monitor your temperatures using free software.
  • Only buy a cheap Thermalright LGA1700-BCF Contact Frame if your temps creep over 90 degrees during rendering. It is a fantastic way to save cash!

  • You might want to consider a Thermalright LGA1700-BCF Red frame because Intel 13th gen definitely bends.
  • Just be really careful during installation so you dont damage the delicate motherboard pins.

Honestly, for a 13600K at stock settings, you don't strictly need one. But in my experience building these LGA1700 systems, the bending is very real. Here is what you actually need to know about the tech:

  • Intel's stock latch pushes down hard right in the middle, which warps the CPU cover. This makes your cooler lose flat contact, raising temps by like 5-10 degrees over time.
  • You don't need the high-end stuff. Just get any basic contact frame from Thermalright, they are super cheap and do the exact same job.
  • AMD AM5 chips don't have this bending issue at all because their socket design spreads the pressure differently.
  • If you are genuinely terrified of swapping it, just use a good air cooler and don't worry. Your PC won't melt, it'll just run a tiny bit warmer.

Had a moment to think about this more while putting my own rig together. Honestly, if you are nervous about bending pins, just stick with the stock setup for now. I felt the exact same way building my first PC and opted to skip the frame to keep things simple. It works well and I have been perfectly satisfied with my temps. Here is how I made sure my system stayed safe without fiddling with the socket:

  • I invested in high-quality thermal paste like the Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 1g which really helped keep my thermals stable.
  • I focused on getting a solid cooler like the DeepCool AK620 Air Cooler instead, as that made a much bigger difference than swapping out hardware parts.
  • I used a tool like HWMonitor to keep an eye on things during my first week of light editing. If the CPU doesn't thermal throttle under your normal workload, you really dont need to take that risk. Being cautious is smart when you are just starting out!
