I'm planning a new gaming rig with the Ryzen 9800X3D and need advice on motherboard selection. Budget is around $300-400, but I can stretch for something truly worth it.
My priorities are solid VRMs for potential light overclocking, good I/O (USB-C is a must), and decent audio. Don't need excessive RGB.
Would X870 be overkill or worth the investment? Is B850 sufficient? Currently considering the MSI MPG X870 Carbon and ASUS ROG Strix B850-F.
Any suggestions or personal experiences appreciated!

yo, totally agree with Q_Wany about the Tomahawk, it's basically the go-to for a reason. ngl though, i think people sometimes go way overboard with VRMs for the X3D chips. the 9800X3D is a beast but it's not gonna pull 300W like a threadripper or anything. if you're looking to save a bit of cash without losing the high-end feel, definitely look at the ASRock X870 Steel Legend WiFi. it usually goes for about 260 dollars and packs a 14+2+1 power phase design with 80A Dr.MOS. that is more than enough thermal headroom for what youre doing. the Gigabyte X870 Aorus Elite WiFi7 is another one to watch around the 290 dollar mark. it's got the USB4 you want and the VRMs are solid 16+2+2 phases. honestly, spending closer to 400 is kinda overkill for an 8-core cpu... better to put that extra 100 bucks into faster ram or a better nvme drive. just my two cents!
tbh just found this thread and wanted to throw my two cents in. if you are prioritizing reliability for that 9800X3D, honestly you should just stick with any mid-range or higher board from MSI or ASUS. those two brands have really nailed the bios stability for am5 lately which is huge. basically, as long as you get an 8-layer pcb board, you're set for the long haul. dont worry too much about the specific model names... just look for the ones with the beefy heatsinks and the usb-c counts you need. gigabyte is also a solid shout if you want good memory compatibility out of the box. honestly, most stuff in that 300 dollar range is gonna be overbuilt for an x3d chip anyway, so just go with a brand you trust and you wont have any issues.
