Hey all, quick question! Building a new rig with a 12700KF. What motherboard would you recommend? Aiming for something reliable, not trying to break the bank. Budget is around $250. Any suggestions?

Honestly, I have to respectfully disagree with the idea that a mid-range locked board is plenty for a KF chip. I’ve been running my current setup for almost two years now and basically learned the hard way that going cheaper on the chipset eventually bites you if you plan to keep the rig for a long time. * Limited voltage control made it REALY hard to manage temps as the build aged.
* I ran out of high-speed lanes for extra NVMe drives way faster than I expected.
* Getting high-speed memory stable was a total nightmare. But yeah, I initially thought I was being practical by saving some cash, but I ended up swapping the whole motherboard out a year later anyway. It just feels wierd to pair an unlocked processor with a platform that limits your tuning. Tbh, just spend the extra bit for a more robust board now so you dont have to rebuild the whole rig later like I did.

Stumbled upon this today while looking for parts for my own build. Before jumping in with a full recommendation, what kind of case are you planning to stuff this all into? Compatibility is honestly the biggest headache when you're trying to stay under a budget. Like, some of those boards have massive heatsinks that can reallyyy get in the way of a beefy air cooler or even top-mounted radiators. Tbh, you cant really go wrong with Gigabyte right now if you want something that just works without overspending. Their power delivery is usually over-specced for the price. Just make sure to double check you're clearance for the CPU cooler tho. Let me know what case and cooling setup your planning on so we can make sure it all fits together! Fitment issues are so frustrating when you just want to get it running tho.

I've had good luck with the MSI PRO Z690-A. Rock solid, even with OC. Over the years, never had issues. Got mine for $220 last year.

For 12700KF, consider MSI PRO Z690-A DDR4. Check VRM heatsink size; inadequate cooling throttles performance under sustained load. Ensure proper case airflow!

Consider MSI B660M Mortar. Great value, and make sure the BIOS supports the 12700KF out of the box!

Frankly, ASUS has disappointed me lately. Had issues with their VRM cooling. I'd lean towards MSI; their Z690 boards in that price range seem more robust based on market reports.

Hey! Regarding mobos, I'd prioritize VRM cooling for long-term stability with the 12700KF. A Z690 board is likely overkill. Seriously consider the MSI B660M Mortar WIFI DDR4. Solid power delivery, decent heatsinks. Double-check the QVL for your RAM, crucial for avoiding headaches later. Proper grounding is also key for safety! Costs around $180. Enjoy the build!
