Hey guys, building a new rig! What PSU wattage is recommended for a 9950X and RTX 5080? Aiming for a reliable PSU, budget around $300.
tbh if youre dropping that much cash on a 9950X and a 5080, you definitely want something ATX 3.0 or 3.1 so you dont have to mess with those annoying adapters. i personally think the MSI MAG A1000G PCIE5 1000W 80+ Gold is a killer value right now. it comes with the native 12VHPWR cable which makes cable management way easier for a DIY build. if you want a bit more headroom for future upgrades or just want the fan to stay silent longer, the Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1200W 80+ Gold is usually priced really well. ive used a few of those lately and theyve been rock solid. plus, 1200W means youre barely pushing the thing even under heavy load. both should be way under your $300 budget, leaving you some extra cash for extra storage or whatever.
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Youre a lifesaver honestly.
Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.
Like someone mentioned, sticking to that 1000W floor is really the way to go for a 5080 build. The consensus here seems to be 1000W minimum and checking for ATX 3.0 support to avoid those messy adapters. Ive been building rigs since the early 2000s and honestly, Ive seen more than one high-end workstation die because a cheap PSU couldnt handle a power spike. Its the one part you never want to gamble on. While others suggested Seasonic and Corsair, my personal favorites for reliability are these:
Corsair RM1000x. I've run similar setups flawlessly; zero issues in 2023.
Realistically, 1000W 80+ Gold is minimum. Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 handles transient spikes well.
1000W minimum, 80+ Gold. Seasonic's Prime series is overbuilt; be careful of cheap alternatives.
1000W should do it, but Corsair RM850x is often cheaper and works great. Depends on your needs, though!
Hey! For 9950X/5080, don't skimp. 1000W minimum. Seasonic's solid, but their pricing's jumped. Before pulling the trigger, check Corsair's RMx series reviews; sometimes they offer better value per watt. Might want to consider longer warranties – lower long-term cost if things go sideways. Be careful; PSU failures can fry everything!
