Ive been a tech nerd for years and usually my old Anker 10,000mAh brick does the job for weekend trips but Im planning this massive three-week solo trek through rural Japan next month and Im honestly kind of panicking about the battery life on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. I was doing a test run yesterday with maps and filming 4K video and my phone was basically dead by 2 PM which I totally didnt expect. I thought I had this all figured out but then I realized my current bank charges so slow and gets super hot in my pocket which makes the phone throttle the charging speed anyway.
I need something that handles Power Delivery (PD) properly and ideally has some fast wireless or MagSafe stuff so I dont have to mess with cables while walking around. My budget is around 150 bucks because I dont want to buy cheap junk that dies halfway through the trip. Ive heard some stuff about the new GaN tech making banks smaller but I havent kept up with the latest models. Is it better to get one massive 20,000mAh unit or two smaller ones for weight distribution and backup? Im worried about those airline limits too since Ive heard some security is getting stricter about the Wh ratings on the back lately. What are you guys using for serious long-haul travel these days?
I tried a fancy GaN block last year and unfortunately it was a disaster. Heat management was so bad my phone screen would just dim to nothing while walking. Narita security almost took it because the label was too tiny, which was stressful. Tips:
@Reply #1 - good point! I did a similar trek through Kyoto last year and learned the hard way about heat; my old bank literally swelled up in my pocket. I would suggest these budget-friendly alternatives instead:
I'm really satisfied with the Sharge Shargeek 100 25600mAh 100W PD. No complaints here; the real-time wattage and thermals display works well for managing heat safety during long 4K shoots.
Im happy with this setup, no complaints:
