Ive been doing studio stuff with XLR for ages but just got a new project doing street interviews and Im so hyped to start next week! Need something that actually sounds pro for my iPhone 15 Pro.

  • budget around $200
  • must work with my case
  • solid wind protection

What are you guys using for field recording that doesnt sound like garbage?

Re: "Ive been testing a few USB-C setups for..." honestly weve covered the basics but I want to talk about reliability for a sec. I've done street work for a decade and wireless interference in busy cities is a real mood killer. If you want something that wont fail you, check out the Sennheiser MKE 400 Mobile Kit. It comes with a furry windshield that actually works in a breeze and the sound is way more natural than those tiny wireless pods. Case compatibility is always a gamble tho. My tip? Get a short Rode SC16 USB-C to USB-C Cable instead of plugging a mic directly into the phone. It saves your charging port from getting wrecked if you bump into someone during an interview. Street stuff is chaotic and ports are a huge failure point... better to have a cable take the stress than your 15 Pro. Just my two cents from breaking a few rigs over the years ngl.

I'm super satisfied with the Rode Wireless ME Compact Wireless Microphone System. It fits fine with my thick case tho.

  • crystal clear audio
  • killer wind protection No complaints here.

Ive been testing a few USB-C setups for field work and honestly, Im pretty satisfied with how far mobile audio has come lately. Since youre on the 15 Pro, youve got great throughput for higher sample rates which is a huge plus for street stuff.

  • Shure MV88+ Video Kit Digital Stereo Condenser is basically my daily driver. Im really happy with the 24-bit/48kHz resolution and the DSP settings in the app are super helpful for dialling in gain. Since it uses a separate phone clamp, it fits over any case no problem.
  • Sennheiser MKE 400 Mobile Kit Shotgun Mic has been great for directional recording. I find it works well for blocking out background traffic noise thanks to that super-cardioid pattern. Both of these handle high SPL really well so you wont get nasty clipping during loud interviews. Let me know if you want the specific gain settings I use!

  • Spot on. I learned the hard way that:
  • cases block plugs easily
  • wind kills raw audio Really gotta be careful out there.
