Hey everyone! I finally upgraded my GPU to an RTX 4070 Super, so I am looking to jump from 1080p to a solid 1440p setup. I mainly play fast-paced shooters like Apex and Valorant, so a high refresh rate is a must for me.
I am torn between going with a high-end IPS panel for the colors or looking into those newer OLED options if they fit the budget. I am really worried about ghosting and input lag since I have had issues with that on my older screen. My budget is around $400, but I could stretch it a bit for the right features. What are the top-rated 1440p monitors right now that actually deliver on motion clarity?
Quick question - i think ghosting basically happens when pixels cant keep up with refresh rates - which LITERALLY ruins shooters. I've been really happy with my IPS because it feels so much SAFER than cheap curved panels for avoiding blur... Before I recommend the LG 27GP850-B 27 inch Ultragear QHD Nano IPS Gaming Monitor, can u clarify if u prefer a flat or curved screen??
> My budget is around $400, but I could stretch it a bit for the right features. For your situation, basically motion clarity comes down to pixel response times... if pixels are slow, you get ghosting. since OLEDs are pricey, i recommend the Gigabyte M27Q X 27 inch 1440p 240Hz Gaming Monitor. its way better than older IPS panels and fits your budget. tbh that 240Hz is a total game changer. gl!
I totally agree with the point about 240Hz being a huge jump for stuff like Apex and Val. Honestly, if you are coming from an old 1080p screen, the difference in motion clarity is gonna blow your mind. The reason you want that high refresh rate isnt just for the smoothness, but because it reduces the persistence blur that happens when your eyes track moving targets. If you want to keep it around $400, I would definitely look at the MSI G274QPX 27 inch 1440p 240Hz Gaming Monitor. It uses what they call a Rapid IPS panel. Basically, the liquid crystals are tuned to shift faster than standard IPS, which is exactly what stops that ghosting trail you hate. It is usually a bit cheaper than the high-end ASUS or LG models but performs almost identically in game. OLED is the dream for zero lag, but for $400 you are mostly gonna find used or older tech. Stick with a fast 240Hz IPS for now, it is the best bang for your buck for competitive shooters imo...
Saved for later, ty!
Building on the earlier suggestion, ive spent way too much time and money over the years chasing the perfect panel only to get burned by backlight bleed or dead pixels. Fast-paced shooters like Valorant make every little defect feel like a total disaster. Just found this thread and wanted to mention that lately, ive shifted back to brands with better quality control because honestly, the headache of an RMA just isnt worth the stress. In my experience, these two are the safest bets right now for your budget:
Just catching up on this thread... honestly, I spent months overthinking my move to 1440p because im super paranoid about reliability. I saw all the hype around the newer panel tech, but I kept reading about weird text fringing and people having to RMA their units after a few months. I eventually just settled on a really solid, well-reviewed IPS that focused on quality control over flashy features. It was such a relief to plug it in and not have any backlight bleed or dead pixels. To me, knowing my screen isnt gonna develop some weird quirk mid-match is worth way more than chasing the absolute newest tech. Ive had zero issues for over a year now, and that peace of mind is honestly huge when you just wanna sit down and play without worrying about your hardware dying.
