sorry if this is a dumb question but I just bought this 4080 Super for my first build and honestly the cables that came with the power supply are just... ugly. They are all stiff and black and have these weird extra bits hanging off them and it looks like a total mess in my case. I saw some pictures on Reddit where people have these really nice colored cables that look like braided rope? I think they are called sleeved cables or something?
But I am really scared because I read somewhere that you cant just mix and match cables from different boxes or your computer will literally catch fire and die. That sounds terrifying and I dont want to ruin my expensive parts. I have about $100 to spend on this and I want something white or maybe light blue to match my theme. My logic was that I could just buy them on Amazon but then I saw some talk about extensions versus replacements and now im totally lost.
So far I have looked at:
Like if I buy extensions do I still have to hide the ugly ones? Or do they just plug into the card? I'm in Oregon so shipping from US places is better. Does anyone have a brand they like that is safe for a beginner who has no idea what they are doing...
Unfortunately my CableMod Pro ModMesh Cable Kit was way too stiff and wouldnt bend. I swapped to AsiaHorse 16AWG Pro Power Supply Extensions which were much softer and easier for beginners.
Re: "Unfortunately my CableMod Pro ModMesh Cable Kit was..."
Coming back to this thread after reading through the chaos. Honestly, I have been building systems for over a decade now and I have seen way too many people get burned by mixing pinouts. It is honestly terrifying how easily a simple cable swap can turn into an expensive paperweight if the pin configuration on the PSU side doesnt match perfectly. Over the years, I have tried everything from boutique custom lengths to basic extensions, and reliability always comes down to knowing exactly what your power supply output requires. Before you drop any cash, do you know the exact model and version of the power supply unit you are running in that build? Also, are you prioritizing the aesthetic of the braided sleeves or do you specifically want those flashy addressable LED strips that wrap around the cables?
> Like if I buy extensions do I still have to hide the ugly ones? Yeah you definitely have to hide the originals in the back of the case if you go with extensions! I learned that the hard way when I was trying to save a buck on my first build. I bought these super cheap extensions because I spent all my money on the GPU and had like 40 bucks left. My case was a total disaster behind the motherboard tray... honestly it was bulging out so much I had to sit on the side panel just to get the screws in. I spent four hours just trying to tuck those stiff rubber cables away and it was a nightmare. It made me realize that even if the front looks amazing, the back can be a total mess if you dont have enough room for the extra length. I eventually just gave up on making it perfect and shoved everything into the basement near the power supply. Anyway, just make sure your case has enough space for all that extra bulk or youre gonna have a bad time like I did, but yeah.
