I finally managed to get a PS5 a few weeks ago after saving up forever and honestly i love it so much but the storage space is just... it is already full. I only have like 4 or 5 big games installed and now it keeps telling me i have to delete something every time i want to try a new demo or get a game from the ps plus catalog. I think the Spiderman game and Call of Duty just took up everything. I heard you can actually open the console up and put a new drive in there but to be honest i am terrified of breaking it since it cost me so much money. I have never even opened a computer or anything before so i dont really know what i am looking at when i go to the store websites.
There are all these terms like Gen4 and NVMe and something about a heatsink which sounds like something for a kitchen or something? I am really confused if i need to buy that part separately or if it comes attached to the little stick thing. I am looking to spend maybe 150 dollars or so if that is enough to get a good amount of space like 1tb or 2tb if possible. I live in a pretty rural area so i will probably have to order it online from somewhere like amazon or best buy and i really want to get it right the first time so i dont have to deal with returning stuff through the mail.
I keep seeing names like Samsung and Western Digital and Corsair but i have no clue which one is actually the best or if they all just do the same thing in the end. Do some of them make the games load faster than others? Or is it all just the same speed once you plug it in? I just want something that wont overheat or make my ps5 explode or whatever. I am trying to get this sorted before my brother comes to visit next month so we can actually play stuff together without waiting hours for things to download and delete.
I just dont want to mess this up...
TLDR: Get a 2tb drive with a pre-installed heatsink so you dont have to mess with small parts. I would suggest the Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X with Heatsink 2TB NVMe SSD as its basically the gold standard for PS5 right now. You definitely need the heatsink. Without it, the drive might throttle or even crash your console when it gets hot. Be careful when you are sliding that white cover off the PS5 tho, you gotta pull and slide at the same time or those plastic clips can snap. Comparing options, the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink 2TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe is amazing but sometimes pricier. Both are super fast and you wont notice any speed difference in games. Honestly, 1tb fills up instantly with games like CoD, so save for the 2tb. Just watch out for the tiny screw inside, its very easy to strip if you use the wrong screwdriver.
Re: "TLDR: Get a 2tb drive..."
^ This. Also, unfortunately some brands are not as good as expected. I had heat issues before... just get the Seagate FireCuda 530 2TB NVMe SSD with Heatsink cause it's reliable.
