I just got a used ps4 pro from my cousin and im super excited but honestly i have no clue what im doing. My desk is really small and cluttered since i live in a tiny studio in Seattle and there is basically no room to put the console flat. I want to stand it up vertically to save space but i saw some videos online saying it might fall over or get way too hot if I dont use a special stand. My roommate also has a regular ps4 and we are trying to fit both on the same shelf so i need something stable for both of us really.

Im really anxious about breaking it because it was a gift and i cant afford to replace it right now if it tips over. Is it okay to just stand it up or do i need one of those official stands? I looked on amazon and there are so many options with fans and chargers and it's honestly so overwhelming. My budget is only around $20 or $25 because i just spent my extra cash on a second controller. Are the cheap ones okay or will they melt the plastic? Sorry if this is a really dumb thing to ask but i literally have no idea where to start or which brands are actually top rated for the pro vs the normal one. Do i need the one with the loud fans or is a basic plastic one fine...

My cat kept jumping near my desk and I was terrified the Pro would just tip over. I looked at those fancy ones with all the lights but most felt like cheap plastic that wouldnt actually hold the weight of the console. I eventually went with the OIVO PS4 Pro Vertical Stand with 12 Game Slots for about twenty bucks. Its surprisingly solid because the base is much wider than the console itself. It never melted anything, tho I usually leave the fans off since they can get a bit whiny. It actually comes with a little plastic insert so it fits the slim or the pro. If youre really worried about it falling, just make sure whatever you buy has some rubber grips on the bottom... it makes a huge difference on smooth desks.

Building on the earlier suggestion, do you need one big stand for both units or two separate ones for the shelf? Tbh, budget stands are fine if they dont have cheap motors.

In my experience, those cheap fan stands are a waste of cash. They rarely improve thermals and just add noise. For a cluttered desk, you really need the Sony PlayStation 4 Vertical Stand CUH-ZST2 tho.

  • Uses a secure mounting screw
  • Specific inserts for Pro and Slim
  • Rubberized base prevents sliding Its the most stable way to keep it upright and wont block the intake vents... dont waste money on the generic ones.

TLDR: Skip the traditional stands and look into wall mounts or simple high-friction feet instead. Most of those cheap bases actually block the primary air intakes on the side panels, which is a huge reliability risk for the Pro long-term. I actually had a bit of a nightmare scenario a few years back with my first Pro. I was so worried about desk space that I grabbed one of those basic vertical plastic bases, thinking it was the safest bet. But after a month of heavy use, I noticed my console was sounding like a literal jet engine. I actually took a thermal sensor to the casing and found the bottom edge was getting dangerously hot because the stand was basically acting like a plastic wall against the intake vents. It made me realize that unless a stand has a massive clearance for airflow, it might be doing more harm than good. I ended up ditching the stands entirely. These days, I just use some industrial-strength rubber bumpers from a hardware store to give it a tiny bit of lift while it sits in a secure spot. Its way more stable and runs much cooler than it ever did in a budget stand. Just be careful about the center of gravity if you decide to go vertical without a wide base.
