I finally saved up enough for a new computer build and I am honestly so scared of messing it up. I got the processor thingy its a ryzen 5 but i keep reading about thermal paste and how you have to put it on perfect or the whole thing will melt or catch fire or something and now im freaking out a bit. Is it like glue? I live in Arizona and my apartment gets super hot in the summer like 85 degrees inside sometimes so i really need the best stuff to keep it cool but i have no idea what brands are even good. My budget is like maybe 10 or 15 bucks for the tube because i spent all my money on the parts already. I need to get this done by Sunday because my brother is coming over to help me but he doesnt know much about the paste either.

  • do i need a special spreader tool or can i just use my finger?
  • how long does one tube last or is it a one time thing?
  • what brand is the safest for someone who has literally never touched a computer part before?
  • do i need to buy special cleaner too if i mess up the first try?

i dont want to break my new toy before i even turn it on so please help me pick the right one that isnt too hard to use...

> do i need to buy special cleaner too if i mess up the first try? @Reply #1 - good point! I have been very happy using Arctic MX-4 Thermal Compound 4g since it is cheap and reliable. You dont need to buy a special cleaner; high-percentage isopropyl alcohol from any pharmacy works perfectly for cleaning the CPU. One tube is enough for several applications, so it is definitely a good value for your budget.

Building is fantastic! I love it! Warning, dont use your finger because oils ruin the contact. Too much paste is amazing at making a mess, so use exactly one pea-sized drop.
