I'm building a new gaming PC and considering either a 1440p or 1080p monitor. I've heard mixed opinions about the RX 7700 XT's performance at these resolutions. Should I prioritize higher resolution for future-proofing, or is 1080p better for ultra settings? My budget is around $500. Any recommendations or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!
tbh i was in the same boat when i first built my rig. i spent so much time worrying about whether my card could handle 1440p or if i should just stick to 1080p for those maxed out settings. honestly? once i made the jump to 1440p with my 7700 xt, i never looked back. the extra screen real estate and sharpness in games like starfield or cyberpunk is just way better than having a few extra frames at 1080p. i ended up going with the Dell G2724D 27-inch QHD 165Hz Gaming Monitor and it has been absolute fire. the colors are great and it handles freesync perfectly with my amd card. if you want something with a bit more utility, the Gigabyte M27Q 27-inch 170Hz 1440p KVM Gaming Monitor is also a legend in this price range. both should be well under your $500 budget, probably closer to $300, which leaves you cash for games. dont let people scare you into thinking the 7700 xt cant do 1440p... it definitely can.
To add to the point above: Ive tried many setups over the years, and honestly, the whole ultra settings or bust mentality is kind of a trap. When I first got my current card, I was terrified that 1440p would just kill my frame rates, so I stuck with my old 1080p panel for way too long. Huge mistake. Eventually, I just bit the bullet on the 1440p display I have now. Heres what I actually learned:
Big if true
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!

tbh i kind of disagree about sticking to 1080p just for the sake of ultra settings. after staring at screens for years, i think people overlook the long-term stuff that isnt just about frame rates. I'm still learning all the technical stuff, but from my experience: - like if you get a 27 inch or bigger screen at 1080p, the image looks really grainy once you get used to it. it basically looks like a screen door after a while.
- you might find that 1080p feels really small for like, literally anything else you do on the pc besides gaming. - wait no, i mean the actual desktop space feels cramped, if that makes sense? basically youre gonna have this monitor way longer than that gpu. id be worried that youll regret the lower resolution in a year or two when the "new" feeling wears off. honestly, is "ultra" really worth the blurry text for the next five years? wouldnt it be better to just use FSR or lower one or two settings to get that crisp look?

For a $500 budget, pairing the RX 7700 XT with a high refresh rate 1080p monitor will give you excellent performance at ultra settings today. While 1440p is tempting for future-proofing, the 7700 XT performs better at 1080p. You could get a good 1440p monitor and turn settings down, but for max settings now, 1080p is the sweet spot.

For the 7700 XT, I'd recommend the LG 27GP850-B. It's a 1440p 180Hz IPS panel that hits the sweet spot for what your card can handle. The 7700 XT drives it perfectly in most games at high/ultra settings. Color accuracy is excellent out of the box, and it supports FreeSync Premium Pro for smooth gameplay. Picked mine up for around $299 on sale - best bang for buck in this performance tier.
