So I finally upgraded my rig and I'm honestly so pumped to get my desk setup looking clean but man these new USB-C hubs are a total minefield lol. I've been using dongles forever so I figured it would be easy but my logic was flawed because I didnt realize how many of these things cant actually handle 4K at 60Hz while charging a thirsty laptop. I was looking at Satechi but heard they overheat during heavy video editing. I'm heading to a conference in Chicago next Friday so I need to grab something reliable under $100 like yesterday. What are you guys actually using that doesnt drop connection when you plug in a peripheral?
Look, if youre chasing 4K at 60Hz you really gotta be careful with the specs on these cheaper hubs. Most of the stuff you find on Amazon says it supports 4K but they bury the 30Hz limit in the fine print. Ive gone through a few that promised the world and then just throttled my laptop because they couldnt handle the power passthrough. Im currently using the Anker 555 USB-C Hub 8-in-1 and its been solid for my daily workflow. It handles the 60Hz refresh rate fine but honestly it still gets kinda warm if youre pushing power and data at the same time. You definitely want to make sure your laptop actually supports DisplayPort 1.4 over USB-C. If your port is only DP 1.2, youre stuck at 30Hz no matter how good the hub is tho. Id suggest looking at the Plugable USB-C 7-in-1 Hub with 4K 60Hz HDMI as another safe bet. I trust their engineering more than some random brand because they actually test for compatibility issues. Just a tip: if youre using a high-wattage charger, dont plug it directly into the hub if you can avoid it. Using a separate port for charging usually keeps the hub cooler and prevents those annoying disconnects when the power fluctuates. Better to be safe than have your external drive unmount in the middle of a transfer... trust me on that one.
Agree, specs are tricky. Be careful with heat tho. id suggest these:
^ This. Also, thermal throttling is unfortunately common with these. I found the Ugreen Revodok Pro 209 7-in-1 Hub more stable than Satechi.
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
