So I finally upgraded my old laptop to one of those newer ones that basically only has USB-C ports and I thought I was prepared but man it is a struggle. Ive been using these types of setups for years at the studio but I just ran into this weird flickering issue with my current cheapo hub whenever I try to run my 4K monitor at 60Hz while also charging... its super distracting. My logic was that any generic 10-in-1 would handle it but I think I might be hitting some bandwidth limit or maybe the power delivery isnt stable enough.

I was thinking about getting one of those fancy CalDigit docks but they are way too expensive for what I need right now plus I need something portable for when I'm on site. Budget is like under 100 bucks really and I need it by Tuesday because I have a huge video edit due for a client in NYC. I'm looking for something that wont overheat because my last one got hot enough to cook an egg on which cant be good for the internals right?

Must haves for me:

  • at least two USB-A ports for my legacy drives
  • SD card slot (v3.0 preferably)
  • HDMI that actually does 4K60 without dying
  • solid power passthrough like 85W or 100W

Does anyone actually make a reliable one that doesnt cost an arm and a leg? Every time I look at reviews on Amazon they all seem fake or conflicting...

^ This. Also, if you want to save some cash, I've been super satisfied with the CalDigit SOHO Dock USB-C 4K60Hz 100W PD. It runs incredibly cool and works well for on-site edits.

Honestly, most of these hubs are such a letdown. I had one that got so hot it basically cooked itself during a long render... super frustrating when you're on a deadline. Unfortunately, those cheap 10-in-1s never actually hit 4K60 reliably.

  • Anker 555 USB-C Hub 8-in-1 100W PD 4K60Hz
  • Satechi USB-C Multiport Adapter V2 4K60Hz The Anker is the only one I've tried that doesnt overheat.

Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, most of these hubs are such a..."

  • I disagree tbh. The OWC USB-C Travel Dock E is rock solid for 4K60; it doesn't overheat like cheap ones.
