so ive been looking at my pc lately and it just looks kinda boring inside honestly. i know this might be a super dumb question but i keep seeing these cool looking metal or plastic plates on peoples graphics cards and i really want one for mine. i have a rtx 4070 right now and it feels like the back is just plain ugly circuit board and i want to spice it up a bit since i just finished my first build last month.

im honestly so lost on where to even buy these or if they are like universal or what. here is what i am looking for:

  • needs to be under like 50 bucks because i blew most of my budget on the gpu itself
  • i live in the uk so shipping cant be crazy expensive
  • i really like the minimalist look maybe just matte black or something with a subtle logo
  • ideally something that doesnt require me to take the whole card apart because im honestly terrified of breaking it

are there any specific websites you guys trust for this? i dont want to accidentally order something that melts or causes my card to overheat or something, is that even a real risk? i have no idea what im doing so any advice would be great...

Honestly, covering up that bare PCB is a rite of passage for every builder. Over the years I have tried many custom plates, and for a clean look on a budget, you dont need to spend a fortune or risk your warranty. Since you are in the UK and worried about temps, check these out:

  • V1 Tech offers some great custom magnetic covers that just snap on, so no disassembly required. They look super slick in matte black.
  • ColdZero is actually based in Portugal but they ship to the UK constantly and their quality is top tier. They have some really nice minimalist designs. Just make sure you dont cover the vents if your card has a flow-through design like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Founders Edition. You could look at EKWB EK-Quantum Vector 2 RTX 4070 Backplate if you eventually want to go full custom, but for now, magnetic covers are totally safe as long as they arent trapping heat.

Saw your post earlier and totally get it! Backplates are amazing for hiding those ugly PCBs. I once grabbed a V1 Tech Custom GPU Backplate for my setup and the install was super easy with just magnets. It never overheated either!

  • Check out ColdZero for UK shipping
  • Look for magnetic mounts to avoid dismantling
  • Stick to acrylic for better temps Honestly, just take it slow and your build will look fantastic!

Jumping in here because I actually learned the hard way about backplates. Honestly, I tried to save money early on and bought some cheap acrylic sheet from a random seller, but unfortunately, it ended up warping slightly because it sat too close to the hot backplate. It looked cool for a month but eventually, the material just couldn't handle the heat output from the card, which was super frustrating. Since you want to avoid taking the card apart, you have to be really careful with the mounting method. Magnets are definitely the way to go if you can find them, but keep these things in mind before you pull the trigger:

  • Check the material thickness because if it's too thick, you might run into issues with your case side panel clearance
  • Skip any plastic that doesn't explicitly state it is heat-resistant, or you will be throwing your money away like I did
  • Consider just using a vinyl skin if you want a matte black look without the weight or heat retention of a thick plate I eventually stopped messing with generic stuff and grabbed a JMMOD Custom GPU Backplate Magnetic Mount because it actually fit well. It was a bit more of an investment, but not having to worry about my hardware overheating was worth it. Just take your time and dont rush the install, honestly, the peace of mind is way better than saving ten bucks.

@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly though, staring at the back of my GPU makes me want to scream sometimes. It is just a sea of gray and exposed components that makes my heart drop every time I look through the side panel. It feels like such a waste of potential when the rest of the rig looks so clean! I really feel your pain with the budget struggle too. Trying to find something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg while still being decent quality is basically a full-time job. It is just so annoying that they don't just ship these cards looking finished to begin with.

  • Honestly just stick with a simple brand like ColdZero
  • Maybe look into generic magnetic options if you can find them
  • Anything is better than staring at that bare metal board all day I am still fuming about how much effort it takes just to make the thing look nice without voiding a warranty. It is honestly absurd how hard it is to just cover up a PCB!
