Hey everyone! I am finally getting around to putting together my dream PC build in a white Lian Li O11 Dynamic. I am going for a strictly white and silver theme, and the stock black cables coming off my Corsair RM850x power supply are really ruining the vibe. I have been looking at some custom braided extensions from brands like CableMod and AsiaHorse because they look incredible and are much cheaper than buying a full set of replacement cables.
Right now, I am running an EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 which requires three 8-pin PCIe connectors. I also have a 40-series card on my radar for later this year. My main concern is whether these extensions are actually safe and recommended for every type of GPU, or if I am asking for trouble by adding extra length and another point of failure to the power delivery. I have read some horror stories on some subreddits about pins getting loose or voltage drops causing stability issues during heavy gaming sessions.
Specifically, I am worried about:
I really want that clean, tucked-away look where only the braided cables are visible, but I do not want to risk melting a connector or damaging my expensive components just for the sake of aesthetics. I have heard some people say extensions are totally fine for low-power cards but a bad idea for the high-end stuff that pulls 350W or more. It feels like I'm stuck between choosing safety and style.
What has your experience been with these? Do you think custom power cable extensions are recommended for all GPU models, or are there specific high-wattage cards where you should strictly avoid them and stick to direct PSU replacements?
Honestly, i'd be super careful with extensions on a 3080. Adding more connection points just creates more resistance and potential failure spots, especially with high power draw. If you're moving to a 40-series card, i'd definitely skip extensions and go with a direct replacement like the CableMod C-Series Pro ModMesh Sleeved Cable Kit for Corsair RM Black/White. It's much safer than risking a melt on your expensive hardware just for aesthetics.
Basically just make sure you get 16AWG wires. The AsiaHorse 16AWG Pro Power Supply Cable Extensions White handle that 350W draw way better than standard 18AWG stuff without the heat.
I get the clean look appeal, but honestly, after my own experience, I would skip extensions for high-wattage cards. I had a set a while back and started getting random black screens under load. Turns out that extra connection point caused just enough voltage drop to be unstable. I ended up wasting money on extensions only to go back to stock cables for peace of mind. Safety over style, imo.
I am so excited for your white build, that O11 is gonna look absolutely amazing! Tbh, while extensions look incredible, I would not say they are recommended for every single GPU, especially the power-hungry ones like your 3080! Adding extra connections can be a bit sketchy when you are pulling 350W or more, so I totally get being nervous. Here are a few options I have been looking at for my own setup:
