The Nintendo Switch has been a hugely successful console, but rumors are starting to swirl about the inevitable next generation Switch 2. Based on Nintendo's history and the trajectory of the current Switch, here are some things I think we can expect:

  • Upgraded hardware with faster processing power and better graphics capabilities. The Switch 2 will likely target 4K resolution when docked.
  • A new more efficient chip design, possibly custom silicon from Nvidia again, to enable better performance with less power draw for longer battery life in handheld mode.
  • Improvements to the Joy-Con controllers to address drift issues. Haptic feedback and adaptive triggers similar to the PS5 DualSense would be amazing.
  • Continued support for backwards compatibility with Switch games. Nintendo values this.
  • More internal storage, at least 128GB, with continued support for microSD expansion.
  • An improved dock with ethernet port and more USB ports.
  • Possibly a larger OLED screen for the handheld with smaller bezels.

What do you think the Switch 2 needs to include to be a worthy upgrade? What's on your wish list? Let's discuss!

There's been a lot of buzz lately about the potential Nintendo Switch 2, and I wanted to share some of the key points from a recent article I read. While Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed a second-generation Switch yet, company president Shuntaro Furukawa did state that an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch will be made within this fiscal year (ending March 31, 2025).

So what can we expect from the Switch 2? Here are some of the rumored features and specs:

  • Improved power and performance, likely using a next-gen Nvidia Tegra chip or possibly even an AMD chip
  • An OLED display as standard (though some rumors suggest it may stick with LCD to keep costs down)
  • Ability to output in 4K when docked to keep up with modern TVs
  • Potentially a larger 8-inch screen with 1080p resolution
  • Improved Joy-Cons with less drift issues, analog triggers, and possibly a magnetic attachment system
  • Longer battery life
  • Improved Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Backward compatibility with Switch games and accessories (fingers crossed!)

In terms of games, there are rumors of a new 3D Mario game being developed in Unreal Engine 4 as a launch title, as well as a new Mario Kart game (dubbed Mario Kart X) coming in the second year. Other rumored titles include an enhanced Bayonetta Trilogy and a Final Fantasy VII Remake port that "looks and runs like a PS5 game."

Of course, take all of this with a grain of salt until we get official confirmation from Nintendo. But based on the company's track record and the success of the original Switch, I have high hopes that the Switch 2 will be another game-changer.

I'm really hoping Nintendo upgrades the hardware specs for the Switch 2. The current Switch is underpowered compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series X. It would be great to see the Switch 2 have an improved CPU/GPU, more RAM, and a higher resolution screen. 4K output when docked would also be a big step up. Nintendo's first-party games would look amazing with better graphics!

Backwards compatibility is a must for me. I've invested so much in Switch games, I'd hate to lose access to that library. It would be great if they could enhance some of the existing games to take advantage of the new hardware too, kind of like what the PS4 Pro did.
