What is the best thermal paste for high-end CPU cooling?

Putting together my 14900K build today and keep seeing Kryonaut recommended but some threads say it dries up fast at high temps which scares me since my apartment gets super hot in the summer. MX-6 is the other option I found but is it actually good for top tier cooling? What should I actually buy?

Honestly, the 14900K is a beast and it will eat through thin paste in no time if you are not careful. Over the years, I have seen that Kryonaut drying issue first-hand... it is great for breaking records but for a daily driver in a hot apartment, it can be a real headache. I remember my old 12900K setup doing the exact same thing until I switched to something with more viscosity. In my experience, you want something that resists the pump-out effect when that CPU cycles between hot and cold.

  • Arctic MX-6 Thermal Paste 4g
  • This is basically the gold standard for longevity right now.
  • Kingpin Cooling KPx Thermal Grease 3g
  • My go-to for top-tier performance that does not degrade easily.
  • Noctua NT-H2 3.5g Thermal Paste
  • Really solid all-rounder that stays stable for years. I've tried many different tubes and I keep going back to Arctic MX-6 Thermal Paste 4g for builds like yours. It handles the high heat way better than the standard Kryonaut and you wont have to repaste it every six months just because the summer hit.

Re: "Honestly, the 14900K is a beast and it..." - unfortunately most high-end pastes are a total letdown once you actually push them. I had issues with the standard recommendations not being as good as expected for these newer chips. They thin out and lose effectiveness way too fast in a hot room. Its frustrating how much hype some of these get when they fail so quickly.

  • Honeywell PTM7950 Phase Change Thermal Pad 40x80x0.2mm is the only real fix. It is a phase change material, so it wont pump out or dry up like grease. It actually gets better after heat cycles.
  • Noctua NT-H2 3.5g Thermal Paste with Cleaning Wipes is a decent backup. Its thicker and holds up better than Kryonaut, tho still not as permanent as PTM. I spent way too much time re-pasting before realizing the popular stuff just isnt built for 14th gen heat.

To add to the point above: since everyone is saying high-end stuff dries out and thins, maybe dont overspend. I would suggest Noctua NT-H1 3.5g Thermal Paste instead. It is way cheaper and much more stable for a hot apartment. Be careful with those record-breaking pastes; they usually arent worth the premium price for daily use. Just go for reliability over hype to save some cash.
