What is the best thermal paste for high-end AMD processors?

I just picked up a Ryzen 9 7950X for my new build, but I'm seeing pretty high idle temps. I'm currently using:

  • 360mm AIO liquid cooler
  • Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (older tube)

I need a recommendation for something that handles intense heat during long renders. What's the best thermal paste for these chips?

Honestly, congrats on the 7950X, that thing is a powerhouse but yeah... it runs incredibly hot by design. Ive been building high-end rigs for over a decade and the biggest mistake I see people make is overspending on premium paste thinking itll save them 10 degrees. It wont. If your Kryonaut tube is old, its probably degraded or suffering from pump-out effect which happens a lot with thinner pastes on these high-heat chips. Instead of dropping 20 bucks on a tiny syringe of something boutique, I always recommend ARCTIC MX-6 Ultimate Performance Thermal Paste 4g. Its basically the king of budget performance. You can usually find it for less than ten bucks and in my testing, it performs nearly identical to the high-end stuff even during long renders. Another solid choice if you want reliability is the Noctua NT-H1 3.5g Thermal Compound. Its super easy to spread and doesnt dry out fast. I personally use the Thermalright TF7 Thermal Paste 2g quite a bit too because its dirt cheap but has a really high thermal conductivity rating. Tbh, spending more than 10 or 12 dollars on paste is just throwing money away when you could put that towards better case fans or more storage. Just make sure you use enough for that large heat spreader... a simple pea-sized dot in the middle isnt gonna cut it for a Ryzen 9.

I had a similar headache with my 7900X last year. Kryonaut is great for benchmarks, but it honestly pumps out too fast under high-temp cycling on these AM5 chips. Basically, the heat expansion pushes thin paste out. I switched to Noctua NT-H2 3.5g Thermal Paste because its thicker and more durable for 24/7 workloads so you dont have to repaste constantly. For long renders, consistency matters way more than peak numbers.

Honestly, if youre doing long renders, you need something that wont dry out easily under constant heat. Ive been using Arctic MX-6 4g Thermal Paste for my last few builds. Its way cheaper than the boutique brands but handles those 7950X heat spikes perfectly. Another solid, budget-friendly option is Gelid Solutions GC-Extreme 3.5g Thermal Paste. It stays stable for years without needing a repaste.

Re: "Saving this thread" - adding my two cents here. Before you drop money on new paste, I have to ask... how did you tighten the AIO block? The 7950X has a thick heat spreader and if the pressure isnt perfectly even, youre gonna see those high idles regardless of the brand. Make sure you did a proper cross-pattern tighten. If the mount is solid, I would suggest moving away from the thinner boutique pastes. For heavy rendering, you need high viscosity so it doesnt pump out over time. Consider these:

  • Thermalright TF7 2g Thermal Paste - its very thick and a bit difficult to spread, but its incredibly stable under constant heat.
  • SYY 157 Thermal Paste 2g - another conservative choice that prioritizes longevity over peak benchmark numbers. Be careful with the application... since these are thicker, you might want to pre-warm the tube in a cup of warm water first. If you dont get a smooth spread, those chiplets underneath wont cool evenly. Better to be methodical now than have to repaste in six months.
