Best thermal paste options for modern AMD and Intel processors?

Im honestly about to lose my mind with this PC build. I just spent way too much money upgrading to a new Ryzen 7900X and my temps are just all over the place. I thought I did a good job applying the thermal paste that came with my cooler but the idle temps are hovering in the high 50s and it hits 90c the second I open any game. It is driving me crazy because I have a big project due for work in like three days and I cant afford for this thing to thermal throttle while Im trying to render stuff. Im based in the UK and really dont want to spend a fortune on some boutique brand if its just hype. I used some cheap generic stuff I had in a drawer from years ago maybe that was the mistake? I just want something that is gonna actually work and stop me from worrying about my CPU melting down every time I check the monitoring software. Is it actually worth buying the expensive metal stuff or should I just stick to a reliable standard paste? Has anyone had good luck with specific brands lately or should I just grab whatever is top rated on Amazon?

Re: TL;DR: Stop using that old paste immediately and... honestly just grab Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 1g instead. It is way better for high-end chips like yours. Avoid the metal stuff, too risky.

I had a similar headache with my rig last year. If you want something that performs consistently without breaking the bank, I have been really satisfied with Noctua NT-H2 3.5g Pro-Grade Thermal Compound. It is super easy to spread and just works well. Another solid option is Kingpin Cooling KPx Thermal Compound 3g. A lot of overclockers swear by it because it doesn't need a curing time, which is perfect since you have that deadline. Stay away from liquid metal, way too much risk for a workstation build. Grab either of those and your temps will settle right down. Good luck with the project.

TL;DR: Stop using that old paste immediately and grab some Arctic MX-6 4g Thermal Compound. It is non-conductive, reliable, and way safer than messing with liquid metal on a deadline. Seriously, using generic paste from years ago is likely your problem. Thermal paste dries out over time and loses its ability to transfer heat, which explains why your 7900X is spiking like that. Modern chips are designed to push heat hard, but they should not be hitting 90c just opening a game if your cooler is seated right. Do not even look at liquid metal right now. If you are on a strict deadline for work, you do not want the risk of a spill frying your motherboard. It is conductive and one tiny mistake can kill your entire build. I would suggest you stick to a high-quality non-conductive paste like the Arctic MX-6. It is easy to apply, does not require a curing time, and is significantly more stable than the generic stuff you found. Before you repaste, make sure you thoroughly clean the CPU heat spreader and the cooler plate with 90 percent or higher isopropyl alcohol to remove every trace of the old gunk. Apply a pea-sized amount or a consistent cross pattern, secure your cooler evenly, and double check your mounting pressure. If it still hits 90c after that, check if your cooler fans are actually ramping up in the BIOS. Stay away from the shiny boutique stuff; it is just not worth the headache.
