What are the most durable cases for protecting large tablets?

Honestly I am so fed up with these flimsy cases that claim to be rugged but then my tablet screen ends up cracked anyway. I have a Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra which is basically a giant sheet of glass and I use it on job sites out here in Seattle where its always raining and muddy. I bought this $40 thing off Amazon thinking the rubber corners would do something but I bumped it against a ladder yesterday and now there is a hairline fracture near the charging port. Its so frustrating because these things arent cheap.

My logic was that a thicker case equals better protection but most of the ones I find are either just cheap plastic or they make the tablet weigh like ten pounds. I was looking at a few options but I keep getting stuck:

  • Otterbox Defender (the built in screen protector looks like it might mess with my stylus)
  • UAG Metropolis (looks cool but does it actually protect the edges)
  • Spigen (seems okay but maybe too thin for a construction site)

I need something legit before I start this new warehouse project next Tuesday because I seriously cant afford to replace this $1200 device again. Budget is maybe $100 or $150 tops for something that actually works. Does anyone know a brand that handles real world drops for these massive tablets or is everything just marketing fluff...

Honestly, for job sites, I always go with the Otterbox Defender Series for Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. The built-in screen protector is annoying tho, so I usually just pop it out and use a separate glass one. It's bulky but it's the only thing that handles actual drops. The UAG Metropolis SE Series for Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is okay but feels a bit flimsy on the edges. If you're near ladders, go for the tank.

Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, for job sites, I always go with..." the mainstream rugged brands, I have actually found them to be not as good as expected lately. It is honestly so disappointing when you pay a premium for protection and the quality feels like it has dropped off. I have had several issues with brittle plastic frames that snap the first time you try to take the case off for cleaning. Unfortunately, most people do not realize that the sheer size of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra makes it a total nightmare to protect. Because the screen is so wide, the middle of the device is incredibly vulnerable to frame flex. I would be very cautious about a few things I have noticed with these "heavy duty" cases:

  • Impact transfer: If the case is made of a very hard, rigid plastic without a soft inner lining, the shock from a drop on a ladder or concrete goes straight through the case and into the glass. You need thick, high-density TPU corners specifically.
  • Port sealing: Since you are out in the Seattle rain, those tiny flaps on the bottom of most cases are usually useless. If they do not have a deep, seated gasket, moisture is gonna get trapped inside the case and sit against the metal.
  • Lip depth: A lot of these cases claim to have screen protection but the lip is only like 1mm. On a job site with gravel or uneven floors, that screen is still gonna hit the ground. tbh I have wasted way too much money on cases that looked tough in the photos but felt like cheap toys in person. It is a struggle because everything is just marketing fluff these days... definitely stay away from anything that claims to be "slim" and "rugged" at the same time because physics just doesnt work that way for a tablet this big.
