Which portable USB-C docking station is actually going to give me the best port expansion without overheating the second I plug in an external drive? Ive been using these hubs for years but my recent move to a newer laptop has caused all sorts of weird compatibility issues with my old reliable Anker 7-in-1 and it's getting frustrating. Honestly it just feels like everything on the market right now is either a massive desktop brick or a tiny dongle that doesn't have enough juice for my setup. I am looking for something that specifically has a solid SD card reader-preferably UHS-II because Im doing a ton of 4K footage transfers-and at least two USB-A ports for my legacy gear. I am headed to Tokyo next Tuesday for a three week project so I need to find something fast. Budget is capped at around $120 because I dont want to spend a fortune but I need reliability. Does anyone have experience with the Satechi or maybe the CalDigit SOHO? I heard the SOHO is great but some people say it gets way too hot when using the pass-through charging. I really need something that can handle a 100W PD input without dropping the connection to my external monitor every time I plug in a mouse. It is driving me crazy trying to find a balance between size and utility...
Dude, I have been down this rabbit hole and the CalDigit SOHO Dock USB-C 10Gbps is a total beast for those 4K transfers! The UHS-II speeds are literally insane.
Agree on the CalDigit, but that single USB-A port is a dealbreaker for me too. I am always paranoid about my gear overheating during big transfers. Check these:
^ This. Also, the HyperDrive Gen2 12-Port USB-C Hub is a beast for 4K work. It has a legit UHS-II slot and handles 100W PD input without those annoying connection drops. It is a bit larger but stays way cooler than the tiny dongles. If you want something more compact, the Satechi USB-C Multi-Port Adapter V2 is okay for travel, but you will lose those UHS-II speeds. Reliability in Tokyo is key so I would go HyperDrive.
