I have been trying to clean up my desk setup lately because the cable management is getting out of control. Right now, I have to plug in two HDMI cables, a mouse, a keyboard, and my power brick every time I sit down to work. It is honestly such a hassle, especially since I frequently switch between my work Dell laptop and my personal MacBook Pro throughout the week.

I am looking for a solid universal docking station that can handle at least two monitors, ideally at 4K resolution, without any lag or flickering issues. I have seen a few options from brands like CalDigit, Anker, and Plugable, but the price points vary so much that I am not sure what is actually worth the investment. It is crucial that the dock supports Power Delivery (PD) so I can keep my laptop charged through that same single USB-C or Thunderbolt cable.

I am also a bit worried about compatibility between Windows and macOS, specifically when it comes to extended display mode rather than just mirroring the screen. Does anyone have experience with a specific model that works seamlessly for both systems? I am hoping to stay around the $200 to $300 range for something that lasts and does not overheat after a full day of use.

What specific docking station are you using for your multi-monitor setup, and would you recommend it for someone switching between different operating systems?

yo, I totally feel u on the cable mess. I've tried many setups over the years and switching between a Mac and a PC is highkey the ultimate test for any dock... Basically the biggest headache is that macOS doesn't support MST (multi-stream transport) which is what most cheap USB-C docks use. If u plug a Mac into one of those, you'll just get the same image on both monitors. Annoying, right? For your situation, I would suggest looking at the Dell UD22 Universal Dock. Since you're already using a Dell for work, this one is a no-brainer imo. It uses DisplayLink tech which basically bypasses the Mac display limitations so u can actually get extended dual 4K screens. It delivers 96W of power too, so it'll keep your MacBook Pro charged no problem. It usually sits right around the $200 mark which is a sweet spot for the quality you get and it doesnt overheat like some of the cheaper plastic ones do. Another solid value option is the Plugable USB-C Dual 4K Display Docking Station UD-6950PDZ. Honestly, Plugable is underrated for how reliable their stuff is. This model is great because it's got a bunch of ports so u can mix and match whatever cables u already have. It handles dual 4K at 60Hz and gives u 60W charging—though check if your MBP needs more juice depending on what ur doing. Ngl, DisplayLink needs a quick driver install, but once it's set up it's seriously a lifesaver for switching between OS. Both of these should stay well within ur budget and last a long time. gl with the cable management!!

In my experience, macOS doesnt support MST, so basic docks just mirror screens. I've tried many setups and I think you basically need a DisplayLink dock for extended dual 4K.

In my experience, be careful because basic USB-C docks unfortunately wont extend macOS displays properly.

  • try DisplayLink tech
  • check Anker or CalDigit tbh my first dock was not as good as expected...
