I just dropped way too much money on this new laptop for a freelance design gig starting Monday and now im staring at it realizing I literally have nothing else for the desk. My client wants me ready to go for the first morning meeting so I have like 48 hours to get this sorted at the local shops here in Chicago or whatever I can get delivered fast.
I spent all morning googling - essential laptop setups - and honestly im more lost than when I started. I saw a lot of people saying a docking station is the way to go but then other sites say just get a cheap USB-C hub. My logic was that a dock would be cleaner but then I saw some forum posts saying cheap docks can actually fry your motherboard if the power delivery is crappy? That kinda freaked me out. And then there is the whole 4k vs 1080p output thing... I have a decent 4k monitor already but I dont know if a basic hub will lag out or overheat while im running Photoshop and Illustrator at the same time.
I also cant decide if a vertical stand is worth it or if I should get one of those slanted ones. I have about $300 left in my gear budget but that has to cover everything including a mouse because using a trackpad for 8 hours of masking and pen tool work sounds like a nightmare. I was looking at the Logitech MX Master mouse since everyone raves about it but it is like a hundred bucks on its own. Is it actually that much better than a basic mouse or is it just hype? My wrist usually starts hurting after a few hours so I was thinking maybe an ergonomic one is better.
So yeah im basically panicking because I want a clean setup but I dont want to buy junk that I have to replace in a month. Should I prioritize a high-quality dock first or should I put the money into the peripherals like a keyboard and mouse? Also do I really need a separate keyboard or should I just use the laptop one for now to save cash? I just need to be productive and not have a sore neck by Tuesday...
Dont panic, I have been in that exact spot before a big project. If you are doing design work for 8 hours a day, honestly do not skimp on the mouse. The Logitech MX Master 3S Wireless Mouse is worth every penny of that hundred bucks. The side scroll wheel alone saves so much time zooming and panning in Illustrator, and the ergonomic shape is way better for your wrist than a basic office mouse. I used a cheap one for years and ended up with bad strain, so be careful there... it really catches up to you. Regarding the dock stuff, your fear about frying the motherboard is valid but mostly happens with those random no-name brands. Just make sure to get something reputable. For a 4K monitor and Adobe apps, a really cheap hub might struggle with heat or refresh rates which makes everything feel laggy. I would suggest something like the Anker 555 USB-C Hub 8-in-1 because it handles 4K at 60Hz and has decent power pass-through. Just make sure your laptop power brick is actually powerful enough to supply the hub and the laptop at the same time. For the neck pain, you should definitely grab a stand. The Rain Design mStand Laptop Stand is a tank and brings the screen to eye level so you arent hunching over. You will need a separate keyboard if you go that route though. Maybe check out the Logitech K380 Multi-Device Bluetooth Keyboard to save some of that $300 budget. Its small but feels solid enough to get you through the first week of your gig!
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
honestly since you have a 4k screen dont bother with cheap 20 dollar hubs. they almost always cap at 30hz. the lag will drive you nuts while masking. i have been very satisfied with the Anker 555 USB-C Hub 8-in-1 for my daily design work. it supports hdmi 2.0 so you actually get 4k at 60hz which is mandatory for photoshop work. plus it has 100w power delivery passthrough so you wont fry anything. for the wrist pain i shifted to the Logitech Lift Vertical Ergonomic Mouse and i have no complaints after 10 hour shifts. its cheaper than the master series. way better for your carpal tunnel too. skip the separate keyboard for now if the laptop keys are decent. just get a solid stand. you gotta prioritize that 60hz output or your cursor will jump all over that 4k monitor.
Huh interesting. I had no idea. The more you know I guess 🤷
