I'm building a new high-end gaming PC and plan to use an AMD Ryzen 9 9900X processor. I want a motherboard that will let me take full advantage of the CPU's power and overclocking capabilities.

What motherboard would you recommend to pair with a 9900X for maximum performance? Any specific models I should look at?

Building on the earlier suggestion, there is a clear mix here between waiting for the newer X770/B850 boards and jumping on the current high-end X670E or X870E options. While the ROG Strix models mentioned are definitely powerful, they can be a bit much if you just want a stable system that works. I usually take a more conservative approach to parts, so I think the MSI MAG X670E Tomahawk WiFi is a solid, safe bet for the 9900X. It has great power delivery and handles the CPU without any real drama. If you really want the newer features like USB4 that come with the latest chipset, the Gigabyte X870 Aorus Elite WiFi7 is a decent middle-ground option that isnt as overpriced as the flagship boards. Just make sure you check the BIOS compatibility for the 9000 series if you buy an older X670E board... itll save you a massive headache during the build.

If you are really planning to push that 9900X to its limit, you gotta be careful with the VRM specs. Don't just look at the phase count. Make sure you are checking the actual amperage on the power stages. I would suggest looking for boards with at least 80A or 90A stages to ensure stability under heavy load. Be careful with boards that have massive plastic shrouds covering the VRM heatsinks. They look cool but they can trap a ton of heat during long overclocking sessions. Also, definitely make sure the board has at least an 8-layer PCB for better signal integrity. This is huge if you want to push high memory speeds alongside the CPU clocks. Honestly, I'd stay away from anything that doesn't have a physical BIOS flashback button. Early platform BIOS versions can be pretty finicky and you dont want to end up with a bricked board while trying to find a stable overclock. Make sure the board has clear CMOS buttons accessible too. I can help you look at some component breakdowns if you find a spec sheet you're unsure about.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I'm actually dealing with the exact same problem right now. It's been a month. I've been meticulously researching motherboard options for quite a while, and I still haven't found a clear answer. It's quite frustrating because I'm typically very satisfied with the platform, but the current selection process is making me second-guess my entire build. I really want to find a setup that works well, yet I'm just as stuck as you are.
