I'm looking to upgrade my rig with a CPU that's got serious OC potential. What do you think will be the best processor for pushing clock speeds to the limit in 2024? Consider factors like architecture, thermal performance, and price-to-performance ratio. Any insights on upcoming releases or current champs that'll still dominate? Let's discuss the ultimate silicon for squeezing out those extra MHz!
Any updates on this?
Regarding what BliB1 said about those high thermals on Raptor Lake, he is spot on. In my experience, pushing those i9 chips to the limit is a recipe for degradation unless you have a custom loop. If you want a reliable overclocking experience without the constant fear of crashing, I have actually had better luck with the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Processor lately. The way Zen 4 handles PBO and Curve Optimizer is much more sophisticated than just dumping voltage into a core. Quick tip for anyone going this route: focus on your FCLK and memory timings rather than just the core multiplier. Getting a stable 2000MHz or 2100MHz fabric clock will give you way better real world gains than a tiny bump in GHz. Also, definitely pick up a Thermal Grizzly AM5 Contact Frame to ensure even pressure on the IHS, it makes a massive difference in keeping those peak temps under control when you are really pushing the silicon.

> I use 13900K for overclocking, no problem yet. I definitely agree that Raptor Lake is king for pure frequency right now, but you might want to consider the cost-to-performance ratio before dropping a grand on an i9. The Intel Core i9-14900K Processor is a beast, sure, but it runs incredibly hot. I would suggest looking at the Intel Core i7-14700K Desktop Processor instead if you want a similar thrill for less money. You gotta be careful with the thermals tho. These chips are notorious for hitting 100C in seconds once you tweak the vcore. Make sure to invest in a beefy AIO like the Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 or you wont get far without throttling. The i7 actually has a pretty high ceiling and often uses less power than the i9 flagship, giving you a bit more headroom if your cooling setup isnt industrial grade. Just watch those VRM temps on your board too... some cheaper Z790s cant handle the sustained draw. Lemme know if you need help picking a board that wont melt under pressure!
