If you are unable to turn on your Xiaomi MI 4 phone or you have forgotten your PIN password or unlock pattern, you need to enter Recovery mode and reset your device completly or update its firmware from SD card.
To get into the recovery mode on you Xiaomi MI4 phone device

1. Turn your phone compeletely off.
2. Press and hold both Volume UP and POWER keys together (for about 10 sec.) to turn ON your phone. Release power but keep pressing Vol UP.
3. When Mi logo appears release both keys.
4. MiRecovery should appear.
5. Select (using Volume down) and highlight ENGLISH and press power.
6. Select Wipe & Reset

7. Select Wipe all data and select Yes
7. All data will be deleted! Some files may not be deleted. e.g. in Pictures folder etc.
8. After you are done select Reboot to system ONE.
You can also access MiRecovery menu from Updater, Press MENU and select Reboot to recovery mode

If the phone freeze just press and hold the POWER for over 10 seconds.

Touch Settings on the desktop\[Personal] Backup & reset\ [Personal Data] Factory data reset > Reset phone> Erase everything. All data will be lost!

General advice: Before you buy a new cell phone or new tablet, please try the following procedure to repair your device in a software way. First charge your battery, backup your important data if possible and in most cases take out SIM and SD card before doing factory reset. It is impossible to recover your data after doing a hard reset, so online backup is always important. If you are about to sell your phone and you want to wipe your personal data, or if your phone affected with virus you have to do a hard reset. In some cases, you can delete the forgotten password or lock pattern from your device as well. All information is for devices with stock based ROMs. If you are using rooted device, always back up your EFS folder first, containing your IMEI info, etc.! Please also note, that a hard reset operation will not unlock your mobile phone's SIM lock or network lock, but it will remove the unlock pattern, remove the user password or PIN password (NOT the SIM card's 4 digit PIN code). Also note that the firmware version will not be affected in any way, it will not be downgraded, it will remain the same you are using and if you have rooted your device, root privileges remain also unaffected.
